The Capilano Courier is officially accepting applications for non-senior positions in preparation for the 2025/26 academic year. This final hiring stage includes the following roles: humour editor, arts & culture editor, letters editor, crew videographers, crew video editor, crew writers and crew illustrator.
Humour Editor
The humour editor will be in charge of pitching, organising and editing everything to do with the humour section. Reporting and collaborating with the Editors-in-Chief (EICs), the role will include email correspondence with contributing and prospecting writers. The humour editor is responsible for deciding which pieces from the section will be featured in our monthly print issues. As an editor, they would be expected to conduct a thorough editing process and to provide feedback and guidance to contributors. The humour section’s goal in broad terms is to be as funny as possible, so it follows that the humour editor requires strong comedic sensibilities.
Responsibilities include:
- Editing and proofing section articles.
- Pitching humorous articles each month.
- Creating article descriptions for the art team to create accompanying pieces.
- Communicating with contributors and staying up to date on editing status.
- Attending weekly online check-ins to keep EICs up to date.
- Attending monthly pitch/proof meetings and participating in the group editing process.
- Managing contributors and finding new talent.
- Posting articles to the Courier Website once a month.
- Collaborating with the media manager and video production crew to create monthly video pitches.
Qualifications:
- Current Capilano University students or alumni who graduated within the last year.
- Good sense of humour.
- 1+ years of writing experience is an asset.
- Previous editing experience is an asset.
- Comfortable appearing in reels and/or youtube videos for the Courier an asset.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback to writers.
- Ability to create strong writer relationships.
- Team player with great communication skills.

Arts & Culture Editor
The Arts & Culture editor covers both on/off-campus music, contemporary art, film and entertainment events. This section includes previews, promotion and in-depth coverage of cultural events. It’s important that the Arts & Culture editor has a strong interest in Vancouver and CapU’s fine arts, music, film and greater artistic culture. This editor will be tasked with staying up-to-date on current events, preparing article pitches for each issue and assigning them to interested contributors. The editor will then be required to conduct a thorough editing process of work done by contributors to ensure a level of cultural sensitivity, an interesting angle on the monthly theme and adherence to our publications’ quality standards. This editor must abide by and heavily enforce the strict deadlines of the Courier’s monthly print schedule. Additionally, the position requires attending weekly staff meetings, monthly pitch-proof, and additional events throughout the year.
Responsibilities include:
- The ability to find and write a set of pitches each month.
- Responding to EICs, contributors in your section, and additional team members in a timely manner.
- Participating in the group editing process during monthly pitch-proof meetings.
- Comfortable with on-camera appearances when requested for our reels/youtube videos.
- Comfortable with onboarding and training new contributors for arts/culture writing when needed.
- Providingideas/aid to fellow Courier crew members and a kind presence in group meetings.
Qualifications:
- Current Capilano University students or alumni who graduated within the last year.
- Strong research skills are a must.
- A confident and unique writing voice and perspective.
- Expertise and connections in the areas of music, drama, film, fashion, or culinary experience are an asset.
- Ability to interact professionally and build strong relationships with sources.
- Ability to write/complete pitched stories on as little as 3 days notice, if any are dropped by contributors or any unfortunate circumstances arise.
- Able to craft unique pitches & write up short-blurbs for story ideas.
- Availability to attend in-person meetings and events.

Letters Editor
The letters editor will be in charge of pitching, organising and editing everything to do with the “Letters” section—a space for opinions, creative writing, and unconventional pieces. Reporting and collaborating with the Editors-in-Chief (EICs), the role will include active communication with contributing and prospecting writers. The letters editor is responsible for deciding which pieces from the section will be featured in our monthly print issues. As an editor, they would be expected to conduct a thorough editing process and to provide feedback and guidance to contributors. The Letters section deals with a variety of topics, ranging from letters-to-the-editor style opinion pieces to creatively-forward mood pieces dealing with a certain topic—the editor’s task will be to present this variety of articles in a cohesive manner.
Responsibilities include:
- Editing and proofing section articles.
- Communicating with contributors and staying up to date on editing status.
- Attending weekly online check-ins to keep EICs up to date.
- Attending monthly pitch/proof meetings and participating in the group editing process.
- Managing contributors and finding new talent.

Crew Videographer (2 roles available)
The crew videographer is responsible for the filming and audio recording for media content to be published by the Capilano Courier.Videographers are given creative freedom and credit for their work, which includes capturing, organizing, and transferring footage to the crew video editor.. Reporting to the media manager, the crew videographer has a strong knowledge of the production process and can execute video projects from pitch to editor handoff. They are responsible for taking a variety of campus/story related videos per month, so they must be confident in their ability to capture high quality footage & audio on a deadline.
Responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with the media manager to establish the number of videos and the format in which they should be produced for different social media platforms.
- Capturing subjects from at least two angles, shooting b-roll, and recording good quality sound.
- Organizing the footage, labelling the files with the video title and take numbers in a separate folder for each camera angle and sound.
- Handing off footage and audio to the crew video editor in a timely, organized manner.
- Meeting deadlines set forward by the media manager.
- Keeping the video production sheet updated with the stage of each video.
- Attending all applicable meetings determined by the media manager.
Qualifications:
- Current Capilano University students or alumni who graduated within the last year.
- 2+ years of video recording experience (does not need to be professional).
- Knowledge of proper sound recording and mixing practices.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of filming and audio recording gear.
- A strong understanding of file management for post-production hand off.
- Strong social media skills/experience is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of cinematography is an asset.
- Well organized both digitally and with time.
- Team player with great communication skills.

Crew Video Editor
The crew media editor will be responsible for editing all media content published by the Capilano Courier across social media (instagram reels, youtube videos, etc). Their job is to understand the video pitches put forward by the media manager, receive footage and audio from the crew videographers, and edit this footage into engaging content in the applicable format. Must be comfortable with editing short form vertical content, often clipped from long form horizontal videos. The crew video editor will also be responsible for the technicals of post-production video work, such as colouring, sound, file organization, exporting, etc. A preliminary outline of the workload for the crew video editor includes:
- 2 news reporting pieces (talking heads) around 8-12 minutes each.
- 2-3 other various videos, typically based on an article, around 5-15 minutes each.
- Instagram reels consisting of highlights from each video to be posted on social media.
- One hour-long podcast each month and its subsequent highlight reels to be posted on Instagram.
All the video files are going to be in standard HD as opposed to 4K as well to ease the process of an online handoff through a shared google drive folder. The crew media editor position is a good role for someone who’s comfortable with their workflow and knows their editing software inside and out & who can edit competently while hitting deadlines.
Responsibilities:
- Meeting deadlines for finished edited content set forward by the media manager.
- Intaking media from videographers and being available for handoff.
- Attending all applicable meetings set forward by the media manager.
- Collaborating with the media manager and crew videographers to ensure videos meet applicable criteria.
Qualifications:
- Current Capilano University students or alumni who graduated within the last year.
- Proficiency with editing software (any)
- In depth knowledge of post production technicals.
- Well organized both digitally and with time.
- Great communication skills.

Crew Writer (2 roles available)
The Crew Writer will be responsible for writing between 2-4 articles each month with a focus on the news section. The role will include email correspondence with the team and quickly picking up any articles that have been missed. Reliability, quality writing and research skills are a must.
Responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with the news editor for journalistic pieces.
- Keeping an eye on the pitch doc and article spreadsheet.
- Communicating actively with the editorial team.
- Writing any articles that have been missed or dropped.
- Attending monthly pitch/proof meetings and weekly check-ins.
Qualifications:
- Current Capilano University students or alumni who graduated within the last year.
- 1+ years of writing experience is an asset
- Research and journalistic experience is an asset.
- Team player with great communication skills.
- Good time management skills.
- Keen interest in campus stories relating to the CapU community.

Crew Illustrator
The crew illustrator is responsible for creating visual pieces for our articles, as well as preparing them for print and online formats. They have a keen eye for detail, sense of style, ability to interpret pitches, and creativity to visually complement the content of our written pieces. Reporting to the production manager, the staff illustrator will be in charge of illustrating any pieces that have been missed or dropped by contributors.
Responsibilities include:
- Keeping communication with the production manager.
- Keeping an eye on the pitch doc and production spreadsheet daily.
- Illustrating any pieces that have been missed or dropped by contributors.
- Creating additional illustrations for the zine on a want-to-do basis.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience illustrating.
- Experience in traditional illustration techniques and mixed media is an asset.
- Fast and efficient skill level in illustrating.
- Team player with great communication skills.
- Have contributed to the Courier at least 3 times in the past.
